Some random facts and information about Squirrels!

I was out in my local park the other day and noticed that the bold squirrels were all coming up to me. Luckily I had my camera so took a few snaps.

I thought this could be an ideal opportunity to find out a little more about squirrels and show some of my photos. So here are some facts and some random informations about squirrels.

What do squirrels eat?

My immediate answer to this would be ANYTHING!!! But looking into it their natural diet is a mixture of nuts, berries and fruits. If faced with extreme hunger they will eat insects, bird eggs and pick at carcasses.

Last autumn I actually caught a Squirrel eating a slice of pizza, so we know their city life diet varies a lot!!

How long do squirrels live?

Squirrels live for about 3-5 years in the wild. They can live a little longer if cared for domestically.

What is a squirrels habitat?

The ideal habitat for a standard gray squirrel is a dense old forest with plenty of trees and hollows to nest in and forage for food. Squirrels come to the open parks of the city mainly for food and because their ideal habitat is being destroyed.

What types of Squirrel can you find in the city?

There are many types of squirrel but the most common in North America is the Gray Squirrel. I have also seen black and red squirrels here in Montreal.

I really love watching the squirrels. They run around and make pretty crazy expressions. Many people see them as vermin and they probably are but it really is not their fault.

One of my earliest memory of a squirrel is when one ran up my leg and sat on my head. I was so petrified that I froze and started crying!

Do you have any crazy squirrel stories?

I’ve been told that squirrels are closely related to rats, but I don’t care- they’re just too darn cute!

I remember one squirrel from college that used to hang out near the main cafeteria. Needless to say, he was well fed!

I once saw a homeless man in Santa Monica with a pet squirrel sat on his knee while he fed it acorns. It was brilliant, but it probably had rabies and fleas or something :-)

That gave me an idea, if i can get a squirrel and bath it and innoculate it and stuff….

I’m fortunate to live on 2 acres and squirrels are frequent visitors to my back veranda. I watch them running across a line between two trees on my property and always enjoy their high-spirited antics.

Your pics. were really cute and demonstrate how curious and agile these creatures can be.

    Very enjoyable post.

I live in a condo in VA and last fall the buildings were renovated. At some point, I noticed that one of the squirrels had all his back painted white. I never knew exactly how this happened… But the poor little thing was looking very miserable + he started loosing his furr all along his back and his pink skin was absolutely bare. So, he started hidding in my patio and looking at me through the window. He would stand up, hold his little hands together and stare at me. If he was nor around, I would wistle softly and he would run back to me. He kept doing better and fortunately, he got all his furr back before we had any snow. At some point, I could not recognize him any more, but he did. When I was walking to my car, he would run towards me, stand up, hold his little hands together and stare at me. Now, it has been almost one month since the last time I met him. I always look around hoping to see him again, and when there is nobody around, I wistle softly when walking to my car, hoping to see him run towards me… But he does not and I do miss him.

That’s really cute… I love squirrels!! Have you seen him since you wrote this post?

My friend came home and found his jacket thrown on the floor and a candy bar wrapper (empty) ripped open.

The candy bar had been taken from his pocket and stolen or eaten. He was puzzled until a few days later a squirrel came in through a hole in his screen and went straight for his jacket that was hanging in the same place!!

    They are clever little things…
