Unbearable Lightness of Being

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

I have never cried whilst reading a book, that was until I read The Unbearable Lightness of Being. And the reason I cried was over the story of a dog in this amazing, amazing story.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being
is a novel written in 1982 and published in 1984 It was written in Czech and translated into all major languages. The author is named Milan Kundera and it’s considered a Philosophical classic.

Based in the Czechoslovak Communist in 1968 all the way through to 1984 the books follows
a few characters through their lives and touches strongly on the subjects of live and it’s relevance. If a life is only lived once then what meaning does it have, thus the weight of life can only have significance if lives and incidences are to reoccur over time….. It’s pretty darn deep stuff. Oh and of course there is the all important story of the dog…. This is probably the most touching part of the book as it brings a brilliant simplicity and complexity into the life and everyday being of the pet dog and the troubles it faces…. Pure brilliance.

I’m well overdue for another reading of The Unbearable Lightness of Being and I can do nothing but recommend that each and every one of you read this classic. I’d also love to hear you thoughts on the book and it’s happens.

The Albino gene is passed down through generations and can be recessive. Sadly Albino dogs are often very much more likely to have bad health.

Bloggers’ Pets: Javier the Chihuahua

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Jenny from JennyWeber.com emailed me about her little man Javier the Chihuahua.

I had to laugh when I saw this guy. I love the way Chihuahuas look so attentive and ready for action!

javier the chihuahua

Jenny emailed me some great information about Javier:

We bought Javier from a reputable breeder in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1999. Javier was born in July of that year and when I picked him out, he fit easily in one of my hands. His eyes were not yet open. He was so adorable, I fell for him on sight. His father, Danny, was a long-haired Chihuahua and his mother was short-haired. Javier and both his parents are AKC registered Chihuahuas. We had to leave Javier with his mom for six more weeks after making our selection, and we thought the time to take possession of him would never come. All the way home on the day we claimed him as our own, Javier lay in my arms and peered up at me so sweetly! I’ve been crazy about him ever since.

Javier has been a wonderful pet for all these years. He is the most loving, entertaining, and easy-to-please little dog. He does not bark incessantly as the breed is known for; on the contrary, he is relatively quiet and would prefer to sleep beside you as you watch TV or read. He does love to play though, and if you get down in the floor with him he’ll run all around and strike funny poses and generally be hilarious. He does not like his bath or any grooming activities. He simply endures them as we gently make fun of his terrified behavior.

In our family, since all the kids are grown, Javier is our baby. We talk to him like a baby, treat him like a baby, and spoil him like a baby. It’s fun. None of us can imagine life without Javier.

I always had a bad impression of Chihuahuas until my old boss got a cute little guy called Dior, and started bringing it to work. It was only then when I realized how funny, happy, perky and brave they were. I guess their bravery could be mistaken for stupidity but I think they are tougher than they look! Dior actually seemed to hate me for some reason! Most dogs love me…. honest!

JennyWeber.com
is a very entertaining read indeed. Blogging was invented for this kind of blog. Witty, smart, opinionated and very sarcastic. Jenny brings tales and opinions from her everyday life and really isn’t afraid to say what she really thinks… plus the multiple teacups sends you into a tea induced hypnoses making you drink ravenously for days on end. Just try it…. it’s fun.

(Ed. Jenny whipped me into shape and informed me that they are actually coffee cups, duh!! Stupid me. My excuse is that I am British and I always think of Tea!)

Robin Hood seagull mayhem in Scottish town!

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I recently brought you a cute little story about a family of Ducks visiting a newsagents (store that sells newspapers and magazines for US readers!) in Somerset, England.

Whilst discussing this with a friend, I was tipped off about an old news story of a seagull visiting a shop on a regular basis with more sinister intentions.

Ok… the headline i a little over the top but this story amazed me.

Sam, as it has become known by, is a seagull in the Scottish town of Aberdeen. This feisty bird developed a habit of wondering into a small store and stealing a bag of it’s favorite tangy cheese Doritos before running off, opening the packet and sharing it with the other birds. If you think it’s too crazy to be true then check out the video evidence that I found on trusty YouTube.

Seagulls stealing is not new news to me. In England they are huge, much bigger than any Gull I have seen in Canada, and these mighty, confident birds can be very intimidating. I have heard tales such as one pecking a 5 year olds eye out whilst stealing fries or stealing whole fish off the end of fisherman’s lines and flying off with the hook still in their mouth.

A funny comedian called Lee Evans has a great skit about the ‘Great British Seagull’. If you have a spare ten minutes. you have to watch it (it’s not just about gulls and does contain some bad language!). You may recognise him from a few movies, but he is much better comedian.

Ever heard of a Pygmy Hedgehog? Well… there is concern over this prickly pet!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

pygmy hedgehog sourced from bbc.co.ukThis is a pet I have never heard of!

According to the BBC pygmy hedgehogs are are new pet craze in the UK. I must have left the UK before this started!

Until I saw this news story I had no idea what a pygmy hedgehog was, and apparently there is concern over it.

You can see the BBC video here: Concern over prickly pygmy pet

These very cute little animals are being bred purely for the purpose of owning as a pet. From some brief research they seem to hail from Africa (I will try and look inro their origin in a future article).

Animal Welfare groups such as the RSPCA are concerned that these high maintanced animals may become trendy and that normal un-trained people will not have the skills to give them the care they deserve.

The breeder in the video says she understands the concerns but I still feel that many people will buy these and, maybe not give them the care that they deserve.

Personally I think owners of high maintenance pets should be screened and registered. I used to own a bearded dragon and did not need to register but in my first few months of ownership I definitely, accidentally, mistreated the poor thing. In hindsight, I feel, I should have taken an online test or some kind of certification to make sure I knew how to look after it.

What do you think about this? Do you own an exotic pet?
